The recently opened Sgeul na Camanachd – Shinty’s Story exhibition at the Bught Park features a very well known face that represents the famous Dubh is Gorm.
The club put forward our stalwart defender who has played shinty ever since the sport returned in the mid 1990s, the one and only Daniel “Gaga” Gallagher.
If you visit the exhibition which is open Fridays through Tuesday and is free to access you will read the following on the Club Hub which tells anecdotes about club history and highlights one hero per club.
“Whilst Camanachd Leodhais is still in its relative infancy, there are many characters that have contributed to the growth of shinty on Lewis. One that stands out in that respect is Daniel ‘Gaga’ Gallagher. Starting shinty at seven under Boyd MacKenzie he has become synonymous with the club. A defender through & through, he has spent almost his entire career at fullback since Lewis entered league competition in 2011.
Gaga’s commitment to the sport is unquestioned. He is the record appearance holder for Lewis, having played in 84% of the games in the club’s history missing just 46 games since his debut in 2007, all the more impressive when his job often requires him to work weekends.
He has flown to games when unable to make the ferry & has often finished a night shift at work, gone straight for the ferry, travelled to the mainland to play shinty, returned back to the island off the ferry and headed straight to work for his next nightshift.
Gaga exemplifies the attitude Camanachd Leodhais aims to embody, overcoming all the challenges of travelling from the island & committing ourselves to the sport.”
