Lewis 0 – Lochbroom 2

June 25th, 2012 No comments

Again we failed to convert a barrel load of pressure into the only currency that counts in shinty, solid goals, against the Broom. Going in at halftime level at 0-0, it was therefore disappointing to lose a couple of goals in the second half, even though these two goals came from Neil ‘Wee Darkie’ Fraser, who has switched from Premiership Kinlochshiel to the Broom. Well done to all who played and pulled together when it looked like we would have fielded an inexperienced squad – sadly there were a few injuries sustained in the battle to get a result but there is still plenty of shinty to be played this season so let’s get the points that will lift us up from the bottom places.

This Saturday – Lochcarron – Usual Time – Usual Place – Let’s make sure we don’t have the usual result.

Lochbroom this Saturday 23rd June

There has been a wee re-jig of the fixtures, Boleskine are in the Strathdearn Quarter-finals, so we now have the Lochbroom game scheduled for this weekend, Lochcarron has been moved to the 30th of June and so the Boleskine game may occur later in July or in August. Usual throwup time.

Here is the squad announced on Thursday, from: Al Reed, Kevin Kennedy,Calum Stamper, Michael Macleod,Calum Blane, Paddy Sinclair,Connor Chalmers, Paul Duke,Conor Macdonald, Ruaraidh Urpeth,Daniel Gallagher, Sean Macleod,Daniel Macfadden, Stuart ‘Tyson’ Campbell (C),Dougie Shaw, Innes Lamont, Innes MacCuish, Kenny Mould

No game last weekend due to Strathglass unfortunately being able to raise a team, which resulted in us getting the points. The Cannich side always battle bravely to put out a second team so we hope that they will make it over next year. Without teams such as them the league would be a lot smaller and a lot poorer.

Numbers at training have been impressive, let us keep it up.

Here’s the top scorers’ chart to get the blood angried up for Saturday. Can anyone catch Scott?

4 – Scott

3 – Tyson & Will

2 – Donald

1 – Duncan, Kenny Mould, Stompy, Eoghan, Ruairidh, Kevin

Shinty Is An Olympic Sport – Our Boys Give Torch A Guard Of Honour!

June 11th, 2012 No comments

At 6.31am we gave a guard of honour to the Olympic Torch as Eilidh MacKenzie took it from the Council Chambers in Stornoway to start off an historic relay round the town.  This was  great honour for the Torch – sorry Club – and it was an incredible  event for our players to be part of.  We are sure the flame will inspire the club for the rest of the season. Sean is already getting ready to add to his international honours by putting his name forward for the Team GB Shinty Squad at Rio 2016.

Unfortunately the BBC London folk weren’t as clued up about Shinty as our BBC Alba friends are and called us “a local hockey team”, at 6.31 yet seemed to have reams of information about just about everything else to do with the relay, anyway you can get your licence fees worth here – (Update, Jane and Iain who were doing the twitter feed for the Beeb issued an apology at 1015 blaming “untrained English eyes”, good on them – welcome at Shawbost anytime)

It’s not just the Beeb who have a little trouble with Scottish sensibilities though, Dave MacPherson of Inveraray, who has battled cancer to return to the peak of shinty and has raised a good whack of money for Friends of the Beatson, is going to pick up the torch later on in INVERURIE as the relay organisers got the two places mixed – another Fyne mess, excuse the pun – best of luck to Dave, we’re sure you’ll do shinty proud.

Our BBC Alba buddies had a deagh thaisbeanadh-sleamhnaig – no photos of our boys there but there is one of Cleody and Martha – big supporters of shinty.

Lewis 1 – Cabers 5

June 11th, 2012 No comments

A slow start, which saw us concede 3 goals in the first 12 minutes, and an early dismissal meant that we were up against it from the off against Cabers. However, fair play to the eleven men left on the pitch who rallied very well for the last hour or so and ensured that the Strathpeffer men were restricted to only one more goal.

Cabers this Saturday 9/6 PLUS Hearach News

June 6th, 2012 No comments

We look forward to our friends Caberfeidh coming over Saturday, throwing up at Shawbost at 2.30pm this Saturday 9th June – games with the Strathpeffer mob are always tough and hard-fought whilst also highly entertaining for the spectator, but the Cabers folk love to stay for a good party and get the craic afterwards. Fiona and the boys always have a nice word to say about the hospitality they receive in the Hebrides but hopefully we won’t be too hospitable on the park this time. Come along and support the lads.

Sadly we succumbed to Kilmallie 5-0 last weekend but in spells in the second half we competed well after giving them 3 goals a head start after 15 minutes. Photos as always by Coinneach.

Michael MacLeod in action against Kilmallie

Also we’d like to announce that there will be a Shinty Challenge Match on Tuesday 26th. June, Sir E. Scott v. The Nicolson Institute at the Battery Park, Tarbert.‏ There will also be coaching for both sides in the morning and the game should start at 1 o clock (TBC).

The previous game last year in the autumn was excellent as was the Harris performance in the Berneray Causeway Shield soon after. Eòghan will also be coaching shinty at Fèis na Hearadh again this year from 2-6 July in Tarbert, continuing a long tradition of supporting the sport in Tir nam Beann. It would be great to see more young Hearaich involved in the senior Lewis set-up and hopefully we can move to a fully-fledged youth league setup at primary and secondary level in 2012-2013 encompassing Lewis and Harris.
