This Saturday marks the second annual Craig Morrison Shinty sixes hosted by Lewis Camanachd. Last years tournament was a great success with teams from Lewis, Lochcarron, Skye and Lochbroom competing, and this year looks to be much the same with Lochcarron and other unconfirmed teams hoping to travel up.
Last years tournament had all teams playing against each other, with the top two teams battling it out at the end in a final showdown. The six a-side games are played for 15 minutes on a half sized pitch.
Lewis itself will be putting out at least an A team and a B team whilst also encouraging individuals such as the “veterans” that haven’t played in a while and also those who have never played the sport to come and participate in the fun with teams of their own. Sticks and bibs will be provided on the day for anyone wanting to enter a team.
Players are asked to be at Bayhead for 1.00pm with the tournament beginning at 2.00pm. Come along for a great day of shinty!
Congratulations to the boys who retained the HebCelt Cup after a hard fought but well earned 3-2 victory against Uist. Kenny, Donald and Scott scored cracking goals at important times and that’s what made the difference. Match report to follow but nothing can do justice apart from these photos by Coinneach to what was the best Game yet.
Shinty returns to the heart of Stornoway this Saturday with the 2011 edition of the Hebridean Celtic Festival Inter-Island Shinty Challlenge – as always between Lewis and Uist.
The game will start at 1.30pm and a donation at the gate would be most gratefully received.
As always we are very thankful to the HebCelt team and director Caroline MacLennan for their generosity in supporting the event and allowing the players to attend the evening’s entertainment.
After the game there will be food and craic in the Golf Club as well as a raffle.
This year we are also offering two shinty taster sessions at Bayhead from 10.30 until noon on the Friday and the Saturday. These will be led by Eoghan and Diablo.

So, two games in early July – one against Aberdeen Uni where we lost 4-0 at Lochbroom – big Kenny “Barlow” MacLeod was the difference and as he is outscoring Ronald Ross at the moment then it was goign to be hard to shut him out. The Uni boys were very gracious and congratulated us on our progress since the start of the season.
However, last time we played them we lost 15-0 but then drew 2-2 with Strathglass. Sadly, we couldn’t get close to that scoreline against the Cannich side who came to Shawbost on 9 July – despite Tyson opening the scoring, the fact they had Robert Geddes, the third top goalscorer in shinty history in their ranks meant that we came away form the day with an 8-2 defeat – are Lewis Camanachd happier on the road? Anyway, report on the Gazette website and Coinneach has done some photos on Flickr!
